A central location for the router usually makes more sense to get the optimum spread of the wireless signal in every direction of the house. An all-in-one device with a combined broadband ADSL modem and wireless transmitter would be especially handy for this purpose, though it may entail additional cost to provide USB wireless adaptors to every desktop computer in the house.

When a central location is not actually needed, the lay-out of the house can be carefully studied to attain maximum coverage. A wireless gear can be placed at the rear part of the house if the rooms that need to be connected are more or close clustered in that location. A location in one corner of the house may require the wireless signal to punch through several walls which can make it slower and bothersome. All else considered, a high place such as the top of a bookshelf is recommended.
