USB doorbells? Category: Main

A doorbell is one of those gadgets that you have at home that you just take for granted. You hardly ever use it (you live in the house!) and after it has served its purpose of alerting you of someone at the door they fade back into obscurity.

But if you’re the type who wants to jazz up every gadgetry in the house then try to get a USB Doorbell from thinkgeek.com. This cool doorbell is fun to use. Just stick in your PC’s USB slot and upload any 30 second wav or mp3 file to it. Then disconnect it and attach it to your existing doorbell wiring. Cool, right?

WiMax: Connecting the World in a Wireless Mesh Category: Main

WiMax, which stands for WorldWide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a technology that aims to provide wireless data over long distances. This can be done either through a point-to-point methodology or full mobile cellular type access. WiMax is built on the 802.16 standard. With WiMax, a laptop user can connect to the internet without the need for a wired connection. WiMax differs from Wi-Fi in the extent of its aimed reach and the technology that is involved. In fact WiMax can be used to Wi-Fi hotspots together and to the internet. WiMax is competing with 3G and 4G standards in bring the internet to wireless, mobile devices.

Go Make a Slide Show Category: Main

So, you've just come back from a 2 week vacation in Europe.  Naturally, you had your trusty digital point and shoot to document the whole trip.  So, what do you do with your images now? If you are the sort of person who prefers a more fancy way of presenting your travel photographs than the usual photo album, then why don't you do a slide show instead?

Slide shows have the benefit of animating a series of images and putting them in a more easily understood context. Slide shows may also be sent via email, or outputted on to a digital disk, which you can then e-mail to anyone and everyone who would care to watch your show.

New power supplies released by Antec Category: Main

More and more computer peripherals and hardware are becoming more power hungry because of the race towards getting the fastest available products in the market. A few years ago, I wouldn’t have believed that a graphics card will need its own dedicated connection to the PSU. But now, high end cards practically demand their own channel to uninterrupted power. This is making PSU manufacturers take notice and have been coming out with increasingly powerful PSUs to satisfy the demands of both computer users and the hardware itself.

Antec, probably one of the more well known PSU brands, recently released 850 watt and 1000 watt PSUs. From the humongous capacities of these power supplies, the most tricked out hardware will never have power problems. But at 249 and 299 dollars, respectively, this is also definitely going to put a serious dent on your pockets.

Music Vrs. Video Games Category: Main

There is no denying the fact that the video game industry is an entertainment juggernaut. The media has harped over the years about how video games have overtaken movies in terms of yearly revenue. Now it looks like the music industry will have to give way to the new entertainment king because of predictions that video game sales may surpass music sales this year. This was the prediction made by analysts from PriceWaterhouseCoopers in its report entitled Global Entertainment and Media Outlook. What is most interesting about the report is that even with gaming hardware sales not included, gaming industry will still outperform the music industry. This is going to put those old fogies at the big music companies in a tizzy.

The Wonderful World of (Clean) Plastics Category: Main

One of the things that has most drastically changed our day to day lives over the past century often goes unnoticed and unrecognized for its contribution to our modern way of life. I am referring to plastic. Yup, it doesn't seem like such a huge thing but can you even imagine your life without it? So what is plastic really made from? The most common material used to manufacture the plastic we now take for granted is what's called HDPE, or High Density Polyethylene. In order to get the quality HDPE which is used for our plastic devices and instruments, manufacturing plants reprocess HDPE Granules resulting in a high grade material. HDPE granules are a form of HDPE regrind, the product of scrap HDPE after going through a rigid refinement process. So look around you, you're probably using a plastic mouse, keyboard and perhaps a dozen other plastic products on your desk. None of this should be taken for granted. And with this wonderful process of recycling, we can not only improve our lives – we can do so without harming the environment.

New Cable Standard - USB 3.0 Category: Main

In this world change is a constant, especially when it comes to technology. From hardware to software, one thing is for sure, the current standard will only stay the standard for so long. With cables, first it was USB, then USB 2.0, and in two years time it will be USB 3.0. USB 3.0 is set to increase transfer speeds to as much as 4.8 gigabits per second, which compared to the speed USB cables are capable of nowadays (480 megabits per second) is 10 times faster! USB 3.0 cables will be capable of such high transfer rates due to the use of fiber optic cables, which will be placed adjacent to the traditional copper wires.

So Many Cards Category: Main

I can't tell you how many times a week I am approached with an offer for a new credit card. To be honest, many of these offers are quite tempting since each tends to provide some sort of incentive plan or reward. But there really is a limit to how many cards I can use and I have long decided that I must limit myself to just the cards that I actually use and that provide the best rewards based on my needs. Every now and then I evaluate my card situation and try to make sure I have the best ones but I rarely ever even pay attention to any unsolicited offers I receive throughout the day. What I do is every so often go online and look for a credit card comparison table which shows the advantages of each card in a tabulated format. This way I can make sure to make the right decision without being influenced by on the spot promotions which can be quite confusing.

Clones as Food Category: Main

The use of cloned animals as food raises not only health and safety issues but also serious ethical issues. Ethical concerns can easily intertwine with and amplify food safety concerns. Proponents of the use of animal clones as food point out that there is no “new” substance placed in them thus the irrelevance for testing. They differentiate cloning from genetic engineering which involves adding or taking away genes. They believe that cloning does not change the gene sequence thereby posing no expected problem.

There is now the question of why livestock breeders cannot settle for the use of more conventional means of breeding food animals. The whole point of cloning is increasing the number of breeding animals with naturally occurring desirable traits. However, whether cloned animals are acceptable to food consumers or not is an altogether different matter.
